What a 15% Premium Actually Means
Colorado is a 15% fee state — and that fee is not a loan, not interest, and not refundable. Here is exactly what you are paying for.
The Colorado bail premium is the most misunderstood number in the entire process. It looks like an interest rate. It is not. It looks like a deposit. It is not that either. Here is what it actually is.
The premium is a one-time, state-regulated fee
Colorado law sets the standard premium at 15% of the total bail amount. On a $10,000 bond, the premium is $1,500. That money is paid to the bail bond company in exchange for posting the full $10,000 with the court.
It is not a loan you pay back. It is not interest that accrues. It is the cost of the service — set by the state, identical at every licensed bondsman in Colorado.
When the premium drops to 10%
For bonds over $5,000 with an approved cosigner, the premium can drop to 10%. The cosigner is someone who guarantees the defendant will appear at every court date. If they do not, the cosigner becomes responsible.
This is also state-regulated. We do not improvise the rate.
Where the premium is not refunded
The premium is not refunded if:
- The case is dismissed.
- The defendant is found not guilty.
- The case is resolved quickly.
That sometimes feels unfair. The reason is that the premium pays for posting the bond at the moment of release — work that is done whether the case lasts a day or a year.
What is returned, eventually, is the bail itself: the full $10,000 in our example, which we posted with the court. That return goes to the bail bond company, not the defendant — because we put it up, not them.
Payment plans exist
Even at 10–15%, the premium can be a real number. Payment plans are available for qualified cosigners. We will say up front, on the first call, whether a plan is realistic for your situation. We will not run you through forms that lead to “no” at the end.
If you want to know what a specific bond would cost before you decide, that is a normal question to ask. The math is simple and we will do it on the call.
